This is a really incredible early knife that from my research most likely dates to the late 1700s, possibly around the Revolutionary War era. This is definitely not a hunting-style knife but more of a fighting knife with the large S-shaped guard and the double-edged dagger blade. The knife looks completely handmade and most likely by a blacksmith. I found this knife in Pennsylvania with some other early Rev War items, and this is exactly how I found it: the knife with a tin insert that fits into the leather sheath.

It has a hard wood handle that is original and a heavy iron collar just under the handguard. There is a heavy wire wrapped around the top opening of the tin sheath that was used to hang the knife, probably from a belt. The really great thing about this is on the leather sheath: there is the name " Fred Suttle " embossed into it.

If you look closely in a few spots, you can see a little bit of gold leaf in the name. The embossing was done the same way as on a leather book with gold leaf embossing. I have tried to do a little research on the name but have not been able to find him.

The knife measures 11.25 in total length. The blade itself is 7.25 long. The handguard is 5 wide. With the sheath on, it measures about 12.5 long.

The knife has the original patina on the handle, the collar, and the guard. The blade I'm sure has been cleaned at some point in its life. I do believe the tin and leather sheath is original.

There is a slight dark spot on each side of the blade starting from the handguard going up about a half inch, this is where the tin sheath comes up to. It leaves about 0.5 of the blade exposed and darkened just slightly in that area. The blade is very secure and tight.

The handguard is just a little loose, I'm sure this is from just age of the wood and it possibly shrank over time, nothing major. Please ask if you have any questions.
