Original WW1 era French M1916 LE VENGEUR (the Avenger) fighting knife made circa 1916 by S. Scarce 1st model without the steel collar under the guard.
This exact type is illustrated in "French Knives During World War One" reference book by Christian Mary (see the scan attached). The dagger is about 11-1/8 / 28.3 cm overall; dual-edge blade is about 6-3/4 / 17.2 cm. Original redwood handle with the lugnut in the pommel.
These trench daggers were popular with the French infantrymen as they provided to be much handier in the close-quarters fighting than the standard-issue rifle bayonets or sabers. The "Avenger" was a simple tool, but very practical and deadly; the French military used this type well into the late 1950th. Well over 100 years later, this scarce WW1 French fighting dagger is still in 100% serviceable condition and ready for action. Today most of the surviving WW1 era.
