Up for sale is this scarce WWII U. On account of the lack of fighting knives at the beginning of the war, the "Save a Life with a Knife" committee was organized. They asked citizens to donate old swords and knives in order to fabricate fighting knives for the troops. These blades turned out to be Civil War swords such as M1840 and M1860 U. Cavalry sabers as well as later Patton swords and various hunting knives donated by private citizens throughout the states. This particular knife appears to be made from a M1840 U. As a rule, three knives were fashioned out of each sword blade.

The length of this blade is 7-1/2" with an overall length of 12-1/2". The width of the blade at the guard is 1" and has a spine that is 1/4" thick. The blade is bright and shows manufacture sharpening only. No rust, nicks or abuse damage.

The oval shaped steel guard has a down-turned quillon. The shaped one piece wood grip is dyed black with no cracks, chips or losses.

Both grip and guard are tight to the blade. The scabbard is made of leather, both sewn and riveted. It is in good solid condition. This piece shows light age only. A very interesting piece here.
