Similar to documented confederate used knives. (northern soldiers generally carried store bought, machine made knives). This is exact type carried by a typical Johny reb solider during the war between the states. The steel has a pleasing dark patina. The rough finish is attributed to the hand wrought hammering from the blacksmith (not from rust pitting).
This dagger has an octagonal shaped hardwood grip , there are two short age cracks (very solid and stable). The grip doesn't perfectly align up with the cross guard, but that just gives the dagger more character.A beautiful example of an original Confederate side knife. Don't pass it up!
