This beautifully preserved antique dagger was made in Sheffield, England by Joseph Allen & Son, once one of that storied city's finest makers of knives of every kind, bearing the NON XLL brand.

It's a smaller piece made purely for self-defense in close contact, often called a gambler's dagger or dirk, more commonly I believe used by protitutes to protect themselves from abusive johns. In terms of quality of materials and craftsmanship, it has everything going for it one could want and more. Blade is 4" long (knife is 7-7/8" long overall), hand-forged form the finest Sheffield carbon steel. Handle is made either from bone, or more likely from another natural material that is neither bone nor horn; it has a hairline which is to be expected from age, not abuse or damage. Especially interesting about this knife to me is its sheath.

I don't believe it's original and I don't even believe that its British but it certainly suits the knife very, very well. It's a fine quality leather tube sheath with a cast bronze throat which has an integral belt-clip (or garter/suspender clip, if you prefer) shaped like the Napoleonic French honey bee and I do believe it is French. A GREAT addition to any collection.
