PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. Please read our Terms below for details. I've owned it since the late 1960's and it looked then as it does now, which is fairly remarkable.

I've never known who made it or exactly how old it is but I've always assumed it was someone's passionate home or machine-shop project, probably from sometime in the 1940's or 1950's. It's a massive knife, weighing in at 29.9 ounces (not including the sheath), with a thick, beavertail dague blade that's 11" long and 2-3/8" wide (knife is 16.75 long overall).

This blade is a master class in how to grind a blade, double-edged with some serious serration at its base, all executed magnificently. This serration is echoed along the sides of its broad cross-quillon at the bolster.

As with all carbon steel blades it must be kept dry to prevent rusting but this minor inconvenience is more than offset by the superior performance and ease of edge maintenance offered by carbon steel. Handle is turned wood with raised grooves, generously iron-studded and sandwiched with iron at bolster and pommel. Pommel is further adorned with an 8-pointed star that again echoes the serrated edges of the blade and the cross-quillon. As you can see in the photos, the tang of the knife runs the full length of the handle and is peened over, capped with an iron finial that is forged atop.

The entire piece is ROCK solid and tight. The maker of this knife must have had a fetish for studs; there are 24 of them on the handle and at least another 50 on its sheath, which is also fairly remarkable, made from thick, high-quality leather with a wide belt loop and a very nice studded closure.

Whether for use in the field or as the new centerpiece of one's collection, the kind of unique piece that really makes a statement. An heirloom-quality piece in heirloom-quality condition and one any knife-person would be happy to pass along to future generations.
